Stingray Presents Further Positive Results for Fosar Reliability

Stingray Geophysical Limited, a leader in Seismic Permanent Reservoir Monitoring solutions (Seismic PRM) to the upstream oil and gas industry, has announced successful results from the ongoing testing programme underpinning its warranted confidence in the long term reliability of its fibre-optic Fosar ® PRM system.

A recent examination of an installed Fosar array, deployed in 270m water depth offshore Norway in November 2008, has determined that all sensor channels remain fully functional. In addition, an accelerated ageing programme has now reached 25 years without any degradation or failure to date.

CEO Martin Bett explains: “PRM applications require robust seismic sensing systems that are capable of performing consistently over a period of 20 years or more. As large-scale systems can comprise in excess of 30,000 channels, distributed over more than 100sq.km of seabed and in up to 3,000m water depth, it was vital that the sensors and components in the Fosar system underwent extensive qualification and lifetime testing.

“One of Stingray’s significant advantages is that our core fibre sensing technology was originally developed for anti-submarine defence applications, where a military array based on the same technology achieved 11 years’ successful seabed operation without sensor loss prior to retrieval.

"Now that the technology has evolved, oil companies can benefit from the high fidelity and 180dB dynamic range of the Fosar system in their drive to increase recovery rates at lower cost and risk. The system can also be supplied in a bi-directional array configuration, which prevents any degradation in system performance in the unlikely event of physical damage to, or even severance of, the sensor line.”
